Family Friendly Algiers Point

By Suzette Wilkinson April 10, 2017

Algiers Point is the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans. Sitting directly across the Mississippi River, Algiers Point has a charm of it's own. The Neighborhood is surrounded by trees, parks and beautiful 19th century homes with a small town feel and the best view of the City.

Although we do not live in Algiers Point, we love to play there! Here are our top 5 things to do in Algiers Point:

1. Ride a bike or walk on the levee.

2. Get sno balls at The Dome (on Opelousas St.) and cross to Decalzal Playground and enjoy an afternoon playing around.

3. Playing at Confetti Park on any given day. It is such a nice little playground with lots of shade.

4. Take the Ferry across the Mississippi River.

5. Watching fireworks on levee on special occasions (i.e. 4th of July and New Years).

I also asked the "locals" for more ideas of things to do in Algiers Point with the whole family and here is what they had to say:

1. Bike ride or stroll on the levee. See if you can identify ten different animals.

2. Sunday levee bike ride to breakfast on Huey P in Gretna

3. Go to Hubbell Library and let everybody pick out their own book and sit and read.

4. Go to Crown & Anchor and draw on sidewalk with colored chalk and play Connect Four (they have other games as well) while parents have a nice pint at the outdoor table.

5. Enjoy an architectural walking tour and a historical walking tour with the older kids. Hosted by Algiers Point Association  www.algierspoint.org

6. Play in the dirt at the community garden (615 Opelousas St.) with Bella Brown Bedortha

7. Watch movies at Hubbell Library

8. Geocaching

9. Flying a kite on the batture

10. Take a raccoon spotting tour

11. Enjoy Movies on the Point

12. Listen to Friday afternoon music by our neighbor Rick Trolsen at the Old Point Bar- kids can play outside on the levee

13. Watch glassblowing at Rosetree Blown Glass Studio and Gallery. If old enough, participating is a "Blow Your Own" event!

14. Check out Mini Art Center.

Algiers Point also hosts a First Friday at the Point and Movies at the Point. They also have a Mardi Gras Parade, Friendship Day Parade (the same day as Friendship Day at the Point which is awesome fun for the whole family) and Easter Egg Hunt hosted by Confetti Kids.

Take a day and explore Algiers Point, you will not regret it. The neighborhood is beautiful, the view from the levee is breath taking and the people are very friendly!
